Inspired by the latest Nooma video, "Corner", we are encouraging visiting missionary teams to join us in this expression of sacrifice. The lesson is gleaned from the Old Testament instruction regarding the harvesting of your crops: "When you harvest the grapes in your vineyard, do not go over the vines again. Leave what remains for the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow." (Deut. 24:21 TNIV). Leaving a "corner" of the field or vineyard for another to enjoy is a wonderful expression of love for the less fortunate.
We're suggesting that each member of a mission team take an item of clothing that is especially significant to them, cut off a corner or piece of the item, having the entire team sew the various pieces into an applique, tapestry, wall hanging, quilt; whatever they desire. The finished work will then be presented to the family they serve during their mission trip as an expression of love and desire to share something of themselves. The original garment can then be retained as a visual reminder of the piece of the individual which was invested in the life of another person.
In the midst of a prospering career, the Lord called Jim and Rita Cmolik to bring His Gospel of Love to the people of McCreary County, Kentucky. They abandoned the comfort of their home in the Chicagoland area and moved to the Hills and Hollers, following God's direction to, "Teach the people about My Love, and show them how to take care of each other!"
Who we are...
Hills and Hollers Ministries is a Christ-centered ministry that operates in McCreary County, Kentucky. The Appalachian region, while being extremely beautiful, is very poor. Hills and Hollers Ministries provides "Life Repair."
What is Life Repair?
Life Repair is not a new concept. Its roots are to be found all through the Gospels. It was in fact, Jesus’ modus operandi! Jesus came to restore the relationship between God and God’s children. He didn’t publish papers on the topic, or form a political party, He did this by going out to where the people were. The end game was restoration and repair, by teaching, preaching and living a love story. The end game was a reconnection, not in liturgy, but in life between a loving God and a lost people. The people of the day (and the people today) did not need yet another religious system with its rules and regulations, they needed help and compassion. Compassion covers the shame of separation.
When Jesus encountered a broken Child of God, He thought, first things first, fix the physical brokenness. Some people had physical maladies (blind, lame, dying, bleeding, leprous, dead, etc.). Some had social maladies (prostitutes, tax collectors, Roman soldiers, social outcasts). Some had family issues (multiple spouses, adultery, anger issues with brothers). Jesus addressed these issues first. This is to be an example for all of us.
When Jesus was preaching to the masses, the people were hungry. He fed them. He saw that as vital to His mission. The bottom line is that People’s physical, social and familial needs were significant repair areas for Jesus. He realized spiritual healing cannot occur until these other things were addressed. ...more
